Going Forward
While you may have built a bridge back to working with this individual, it’s important that you recognize that she is not on your list of reliable coworkers. Keep the relationship superficial and professional. Try to create situations in which there are witnesses to any agreements—other people who see you both make a commitment. If you feel it necessary to warn others, you can suggest that they too send written confirmations of any tasks that she agrees to do.
Coffee Break
Strike when You’ve Cooled Off—Not in the Heat of the Moment
Used constructively, anger can serve as your protection. But lashing out in anger or yelling at someone in the heat of the moment puts you in a compromised position. You might say something that you regret, and your angry outburst may seem out of proportion to the offense. Neither of these outcomes will improve your situation.
You’ll appear more professional (and be more powerful) if you speak or write to a woman who angers you from a position of calmness and clarity. The next time someone at work says or does something that maddens you, do your best not to react. Instead, take a slow, deep breath and calmly respond with neutral statements like, “Is that so?” “Interesting,” “Hmmm,” or, “Let me think about that.”
Then, take the time to chill: splash your face with cold water, exercise, call a friend, or walk the dog. Do something to cool your system down. Once you relax, you can come up with an appropriate, professional response.
